Description & Requirements
A Lead Geologist in the mining industry is crucial in evaluating the mineral potential of a mining site and providing geological insights that inform every stage of the mining process. This role is integral to identifying mineral deposits, analyzing the quality and quantity of ores, and developing exploration strategies to ensure the sustainable and efficient extraction of resources. The Lead Geologist works closely with mining engineers, environmental specialists, and management teams to ensure that the mining process is not only economically viable but also environmentally responsible. The position involves both fieldwork and office-based analysis, utilizing cutting-edge technology and data to produce accurate geological models and assessments.
Responsibilities
- A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred.
- Professional certification or membership with geological societies (e.g., AIPG or SPE).
- Extensive experience in geological fieldwork, mineral exploration, and mining operations.
- Strong proficiency in geological survey tools, 3D modeling software (such as ArcGIS, Leapfrog, or Surpac), and data analysis techniques.
- Expertise in geological mapping, mineral resource estimation, and geological modeling.
- Strong communication skills for presenting findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work in remote areas and extreme environments for field investigations.
Requirements
- Exploration & Mapping: Leading field investigations to identify and map mineral deposits using advanced geological tools and techniques.
- Resource Evaluation: Conducting detailed geological assessments and resource estimation to determine the economic viability of potential mining sites.
- Geological Modeling: Creating 3D models of ore bodies and geological structures to guide the planning and design of mining operations.
- Collaboration with Engineering & Environmental Teams: Working closely with mining engineers to determine the most effective extraction methods based on geological conditions. Coordinating with environmental consultants to ensure that mining activities are carried out with minimal environmental impact.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyzing geological data, interpreting findings, and preparing detailed reports for stakeholders, including mine planners and project managers.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensuring that all geological work complies with safety protocols and environmental regulations, and that site conditions are regularly monitored to reduce risk during mining operations.
- Training & Mentorship: Supervising junior geologists and providing guidance and training in geological methods, software, and safety procedures.
